The most iconic and revered temple of Vrindavan, established by Swami Haridas. The charming deity of Bankey Bihari appears in the Tribhanga posture with a curtain repeatedly drawn to avoid overwhelming devotees.
Significance & Devotional Heritage
Unlike traditional temples, Bankey Bihari Temple does not feature bells or conch shells; Thakur Ji is treated as a beloved, tender child whose sleep and peace are never disturbed. The darshan is given through intermittent 'jhanki' (curtains opened and closed rhythmically) to protect the devotee from fainting under the deity's hypnotic eyes.
Swami Haridas, a great saint and musical master (and guru of royal musician Tansen), sang devotional verses in Nidhivan. Moved by his profound love, the divine couple Radha and Krishna appeared together and merged into the single enchanting black marble deity of Shri Bankey Bihari. In 1864, the present majestic Rajasthani-style temple was constructed.
